Фобос и Деймос посчитали результатом столкновения луны с Марсом

Планетологи из США и Японии предполагают, что спутники Марса — Фобос и Деймос — образовались из осколков, возникших после столкновения другого более массивного спутника с Красной планетой. Результаты своих исследований авторы опубликовали в журнале Icarus, а кратко с ними можно ознакомиться на сайте Science News.

Теорией образования спутников из продуктов столкновения занимались разные ученые. Так, в 2011 году Роберт Креддок из Смитсоновского института опубликовал статью, в которой описал последствия такого события для Марса. По мнению Креддока, кроме образования спутников, оно привело к сокращению продолжительности суток на планете (в противном случае Марс вращался бы медленнее, чем сейчас), а также к образованию кратера (автор называет несколько таких объектов на марсианской поверхности).

Согласно данным ученого, с планетой столкнулся ее спутник массой примерно в десять раз тяжелее Цереры — крупнейшего тела в поясе астероидов. Идею Креддока поддержали ученые из Колорадо, которые провели компьютерное моделирование и в конце 2014 года опубликовали соответствующую статью, а также — независимо от них — команда планетологов из США и Японии.

Работы двух коллективов ученых показали, что с Марсом столкнулся более крупный объект, чем считал Креддок. Это небесное тело, как предположили специалисты, было около 300 километров в диаметре — более чем в десять раз крупнее Фобоса и Деймоса. В результате столкновения обломки разлетелись на незначительные расстояния, и в итоге пара спутников располагается на небольшой высоте над своей планетой, в отличие от, например, взаимного расположения Луны и Земли.

Ученые полагают, что столкновение произошло несколько сотен миллионов лет назад. Они считают, что Фобос также столкнется с Красной планетой через примерно 40 миллионов лет, если спутник не разрушится раньше. Планетологи отмечают, что в пользу гипотезы образования спутников Марса из обломков столкновения выступает низкая плотность Фобоса и Деймоса, а также их почти круговые орбиты.

К своим выводам ученые пришли в результате компьютерного моделирования. Их данные противоречат популярной гипотезе о захвате Марсом пары астероидов из пояса между ним и Юпитером.
Если столкновение луны с Красной планетой имело место, то в результате этого в спутниках не должно было остаться воды и водорода. Информацию о содержании этих соединений на Фобосе и Деймосе можно получить, направив к ним космические аппараты.
